This scarf, handmade by Frances van Hasselt and her studio team in the small Karoo town of Prince Albert, is a part of Frances V.H Mohair’s SOFA (Supporting Old Factories in Africa) Collection. The SOFA Collection works with iconic African mohair factories in need of support, and together with Frances V.H Mohair, they create new imaginings around locally produced mohair products. Made from end of the run mohair yarn stock, this collection is made up of small, limited edition colourways. This differentiates the SOFA Collection from the non-collaborative work done by the brand, where the mohair is self-sourced, washed and dyed in-house by Frances and her team, before being put on the loom – handmade from start to finish. Frances V.H Mohair believes in sustainable processes, working with what already exists, and creating unique, timeless pieces which bring warmth, comfort and a connection to nature into homes and wardrobes. This is what prompted the SOFA Collection.
France’s mohair scarves are made with trimmings of her mohair blankets, stitched together using excess yarn. Subsequently, each scarf is completely unique in its configuration of colours, seen in the different sections of the scarf as well as the stitching that holds them together.
