In June 2023, Duck Duck Goose ran a T-shirt design competition. Out of more than 150 entries, we picked this design by Mas-Ud Hartley, titled “Gaatjiezilla”, as the winner. The design is inspired by Mas-Ud’s love for Godzilla, combined with his daily interaction with gaatjies (taxi-door guards or taxi conductors) when travelling to his university campus in Cape Town’s city centre from his native Surrey Estate. One night, while lying in bed and reflecting on his daily commute, scheming what to submit to our competition, the gaatjie’s bellowing “Mowbray-Kaap” announcement suddenly started sounding just like Godzilla’s roar. The idea made him chuckle, so he decided to go with it.
